In order to vote for partisan contests (President, Senator, Representative, etc.) in a Primary Election in Oregon you must:
- Be registered (before the deadline) as a member of a Major Political Party
or
- Request a ballot by 5pm of the 21st day before the date of the election
of a Major Political Party that has opened its election to
non-affiliated voters (NAV’s). NAV’s will receive a notice in the mail if
a Major Party opens its Primary Election.
- All registered voters can vote for city, county or nonpartisan offices or measures in the Primary Election. A ballot with only those specific contests will be mailed to all NAV’s.
Major Parties have until the 90th day before the Primary Election to notify the Secretary of State’s Office if they are going to open their Primary Election. The Secretary of State’s Office must notify counties by the 85th day before the Primary Election that it has been opened. NAV’s (non-affiliated voters) will receive a notice in the mail if a major party opens their Primary Election.
